"De kerk werd vanaf de 13de eeuw gebouwd ter ere van de heilige Rumoldus en was bijgevolg reeds van in het begin opgevat als een bouwwerk dat dient om te imponeren. Wanneer ze in 1559, bij de oprichting van het aartsbisdom Mechelen, verheven werd tot kathedraal, werden status en grootsheid nog versterkt. Zo groeide ze na een reeks bouwcampagnes uit tot blikvanger van de stad, met als pièce de résistance de 15de-eeuwse toren van het bouwmeestersgeslacht Keldermans.
Bij de godsdienstoorlogen in de zestiende eeuw krijgt de kerk het hard te verduren : veel van het oude interieur gaat verloren. Het Calvinistische bewind op het einde van die eeuw verwijdert alles wat naar de katholieke eredienst verwijst. Maar de kerk overleeft nog meer stormen: in beide wereldoorlogen wordt Mechelen gebombardeerd en in 1972 breekt een grote brand uit boven het koor.
Als metropolitaanse kerk is de Sint-Romboutskathedraal de belangrijkste kerk van het land. Ze fungeert eveneens als mausoleum voor alle Mechelse aartsbisschoppen sinds 1559.
Het interieur is ronduit adembenemend. Monumentale praalgraven en epitafen sieren de kooromgang. Je kan er het schilderij 'Christus aan het kruis' van Antoon van Dyck bewonderen, net zoals prachtige werken van onder meer Michiel Coxcie en Gaspar de Craeyer. Het pronkstuk in de kerk, naast het hoofdaltaar van Lucas Fayd’herbe uit 1665, is een collectie laat-vijftiende-eeuwse schilderijtjes die het leven van de heilige Rombout voorstellen in de stijl van de Vlaamse Primitieven.
Het monumentale Stevens-orgel in de kathedraal (6600 pijpen) werd ontworpen door Flor Peeters en door hem ingespeeld in 1958."

The church was built from the 13th century in honor of the holy Rumoldus and was therefore from the beginning understood as a structure that serves to impress. When she was elevated to a cathedral in 1559, when the archdiocese of Mechelen was founded, status and greatness were strengthened. The interior is nothing short of breathtaking. Monumental tombs and epitaphs decorate the choir aisle. You can admire the painting 'Christ on the Cross' by Antoon van Dyck, as well as beautiful works by, among others, Michiel Coxcie and Gaspar de Craeyer. The showpiece in the church, next to the main altar of Lucas Fayd'herbe from 1665, is a collection of late-fifteenth-century paintings that represent the life of the Holy Rombout in the style of the Flemish Primitives."

"L'église a été construite à partir du 13ème siècle en l'honneur du saint Rumoldus et a donc été comprise dès le début comme une structure qui sert à impressionner. Lorsqu'elle fut érigée en cathédrale en 1559, lors de la fondation de l'archidiocèse de Malines, le statut et la grandeur furent renforcés. Ainsi, après une série de campagnes de construction, elle devint le point de mire de la ville avec la tour du XVe siècle du maître constructeur Keldermans comme pièce de résistance.
Au cours des guerres de religion du XVIe siècle, l'église a connu des moments difficiles: une grande partie du vieil intérieur est perdue. Mais l'église survit à encore plus de tempêtes: lors des deux guerres mondiales, Malines est bombardée et en 1972, un grand incendie se déclare au-dessus du chœur.

L'intérieur est à couper le souffle. Des tombes monumentales et des épitaphes décorent le couloir du chœur.
