Ajo is a company mining town developed in 1917 to serve the open pit New Cornelia Mine. The town was developed by John Greenway, the mine owner, and it centered around a grand plaza. The railway station anchors the plaza and it's arranged so that those arriving by train step out with a view of the plaza on either side and a school in the distance. The station, and the plaza have been restored to their original appearance. the railroad was founded in 1915 and ceased operations in 1985 upon closure of the mine. The station is now a visitor center and houses the Chamber of Commerce.
