Ce mémorial est dédié aux braves de Montréal. C’est le cénotaphe le plus connu de Montréal; il en existe un identique à Whitehall, à Londres. Il a été inauguré le 11 novembre 1924 par le gouverneur général, Julian Hedworth George, vicomte Byng de Vimy. Avant cette inauguration, les Montréalais se réunissaient autour d’un monument aux morts portatif en plâtre, transporté sur roues là où ils en avaient besoin. Après l’Armistice du 11 novembre 1918, il avait été proposé de transformer l’avenue Atwater, entre la rue Sherbrooke et le canal Lachine, en boulevard commémoratif bordé d’arbres et d’écussons de bronze à la mémoire des régiments, bataillons et batteries de Montréal. L’idée s’étant révélée trop coûteuse, le Montreal Women’s Club a planté 840 ormes le long de la rue Sherbrooke comme mémorial vivant aux Montréalais tués à la guerre. Une plaque portant un nom avait été posée sur chacun de ces arbres, mais la plupart des ormes originaux étaient déjà morts en 1934.

Montreal Cenotaph

This memorial is dedicated to the brave men and women from Montreal. This is the best known cenotaph in Montreal, there is a duplicate in London's Whitehall. The monument was unveiled on November 11, 1924, by the governor-general, Julian Hedworth George, Viscount Byng of Vimy. Until the monument was dedicated, Montreal used a portable war memorial made of plaster that was wheeled out whenever and wherever it was needed. After the Armistice on November 11, 1918, there was a proposal to turn Atwater Avenue between Sherbrooke Street and the Lachine Canal into a War Memorial Boulevard, lined with trees and bronze shields to the memory of Montreal regiments, battalions and batteries. The idea proved too costly, so in 1920 the Montreal Women's Club planted 840 trees along Sherbrooke Street as living memorials to Montreal's war dead. Each elm bore a name plate, but by 1934 most of the original trees had died.
