Ajo is a southern Arizona copper mining town who's human history stretches back far before the Anglo development of the town in 1916. Sited next to an open pit copper mine, the town was developed by Phelps Dodge who owned most of the land. The decision to build the church was made in 1917 with the cornerstone laid in 1926. At that time the town was little more than a collections of tents, shacks and a saloon. Construction of the church was supported by the family of John Greenway, one of Roosevelt's Rough Riders and owner of the mine. The tower is located on the back left side of the building immediately above the entrance to the church offices. It is a slender column with significant classical features on the bell cote. On top of the tower is a creative lightning rod. The tower houses one bell which appears to have become inoperable due to the amount of stucco in the bell opening. The entire church is painted a bright white and is well maintained.
