Le seigneur Pierre Boucher, du moins sa représentation symbolique, trône désormais dans le hall d’entrée de la bibliothèque Montarville-Boucher-De La Bruère. La Ville de Mortagne-au-Perche, jumelée à Boucherville depuis 50 ans, vient d’offrir une sculpture en bois du célèbre personnage qui a marqué l’histoire en Nouvelle-France. L’oeuvre de l’artiste Pascal Poirier, maître artisan, est inspirée d’un tableau de Joseph Dynes. En incluant les recherches qui y ont été associées, elle a requis six mois de labeur.
Quelques dignitaires de Mortagne-au-Perche, accompagnés de visiteurs, étaient présents le 12 août dernier pour assister au dévoilement de cette magnifique statue de 1,80 mètre de hauteur en thuya géant ou cèdre rouge, installée sur une base en granit.
«C’est un moment émouvant, un des plus émouvants de la semaine : ce don est issu de la commission des échanges avec la Ville de Boucherville et la Ville de Mortagne-au-Perche. Le but de l’exercice, c’est qu’à la fin de l’année, personne ne puisse pas dire qui est Pierre Boucher», a déclaré la présidente de la Corporation des fêtes 2017, Florence Junca Adenot, visiblement heureuse de cet autre legs remis à la municipalité.
L’oeuvre, pesant plus de 200 kg, représente Pierre Boucher au moment où il a été anobli par le roi Louis XIV. Le personnage tient dans sa main gauche son livre intitulé «Histoire véritable et naturelle des mœurs et productions du pays de la Nouvelle-France vulgairement dite le Canada».
Près de son pied droit se trouvent le blason et les armoiries de Boucherville de même que l’inscription de l’année 1667, en référence à l’année de fondation de la ville.
«Nous avons voulu marquer le 350e anniversaire de fondation de Boucherville en rappelant la mémoire d’un grand homme, Pierre Boucher», a soutenu le maire de Mortagne-au-Perche, Jacki Desouche. Au terme de son allocution, M. Desouche a remis à son homologue bouchervillois un cadeau précieux : les journaux contenant les originaux de tous les articles publiés à ce jour sur le jumelage depuis 1967 en plus d’un livre sur le parler percheron, une publication qui n’est plus en circulation.
Également présent à cette cérémonie d’inauguration, le sénateur Jean Claude Lenoir, ex-maire de Mortagne-au-Perche, a mentionné que les liens entre les villes jumelées étaient encore plus forts 50 ans après le début du jumelage. Au sujet du fondateur de Boucherville, il a ajouté : «Nous avons le devoir, nous Français, de faire perpétuer le rôle et la place de Pierre Boucher dans l’histoire.»
La cérémonie de dévoilement s’est également déroulée en présence du personnage de Pierre Boucher et de ses 15 enfants, tous en costume d’époque.

Life size statue in red cedar wood of Pierre Boucher at the time he was ennobled by King Louis XIV. The character holds in his left hand his manuscript on the history of New France. At his feet, his armories.
This symbolic representation of Lord Pierre Boucher now sits in the lobby of the Montarville-Boucher-De La Bruère library. The Town of Mortagne-au-Perche, twinned in Boucherville for 50 years, has just offered a wooden sculpture of the famous character who made history in New France. The work of the artist Pascal Poirier, master craftsman, is inspired by a painting by Joseph Dynes. Including the associated research, it took six months of hard work.
Some dignitaries of Mortagne-au-Perche, accompanied by visitors, were present on August 12 to attend the unveiling of this magnificent statue of 1.80 meters high cedar, installed on a granite base.
"This is a moving moment, one of the most moving of the week: this donation comes from the exchange commission with the City of Boucherville and the City of Mortagne-au-Perche. The purpose of the exercise is that at the end of the year, no one can wonder who Pierre Boucher is," said Florence Junca Adenot, President of the 2017 celebration Corporation, who was obviously happy with this other legacy given to the municipality.
The work, weighing more than 200 kg, represents Pierre Boucher at the time he was ennobled by King Louis XIV. The character holds in his left hand his book titled "True and natural history of manners and productions of the country of New France vulgarly called Canada".
Near his right foot are his shield and coat of arms, now also those of Boucherville, as well as the inscription of the year 1667, referring to the year of foundation of the city.
"We wanted to mark the 350th anniversary of the founding of Boucherville by recalling the memory of a great man, Pierre Boucher," said Mayor of Mortagne-au-Perche, Jacki Desouche. At the end of his speech, Mr. Desouche gave his Bouchervillois counterpart a precious gift: the newspapers containing the originals of all the articles published to date on twinning since 1967 in addition to a book on Percheron speech, a publication which is no longer in circulation.
Also present at this inauguration ceremony, Senator Jean Claude Lenoir, former Mayor of Mortagne-au-Perche, mentioned that the links between twin cities were even stronger 50 years after the start of twinning. About the founder of Boucherville, he added: "We have the duty, we French, to perpetuate the role and place of Pierre Boucher in history."
The unveiling ceremony also took place in the presence of the character of Pierre Boucher and his 15 children, all in period costume.
