While the Eternal Flames Memorial, (just inside the Memorial Gate) cost $60,000 in 1990, the impressive Memorial Arch was completed and unveiled in April 1927, for a cost of £1,700. Messers Anselm Odling and Son were the builders. (visit link)

Wikipedia also mentions that the public had been considering such a memorial from as early as 1916. A cenotaph had been built in 1922, but with the multi-panels of polished brown granite on either side of the Arch, listing ALL of the local participants, this is a very impressive Memorial. At the peak of the Arch is the date of 'The Great War', of 1914 - 1919; which did not make sense to me, except that it took until early 1919 for the majority of the soldiers to get back to Australia, and as such they were still 'In Service' while in transit.

The 'full' transcript, of the 12 double-column panels, for the local volunteers, listed on the Honour Rolls can be found at: (visit link)
