This memorial is still a work in progress. In 2017 they placed a larger than life sized statue of Doris Miller, standing at parade rest. In 2018 they put up a metal background (the outline of a ship?). In 2019 if enough donations are received they plan to put up a plaque with details of his career.
Doris Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary courage during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was working in the kitchen of the USS West Virginia when the attack began.
Miller dragged wounded shipmates, including his captain, out of harm’s way, then took up a position at a machine gun and began firing at enemy aircraft, though he had never been trained to do so.
He survived Pearl Harbor but died aboard another ship in 1943.
