A / CHARLES LICOT / ARCHITECTE / ARCHEOLOGUE / 1843-1903

"Around 1892, the Belgian State expropriated the ruins of the abbey of Villers to make it a national domain. Consolidation works were undertaken from 1893 by the architect Charles Licot, including the consolidation of the church. There was a debate between supporters of ruin maintenance and supporters of reconstruction. "Is a restored ruin still a ruin? Will launch one of his detractors in the Belgian Parliament. In 1907, a memorial in honor of Charles Licot, who died in 1903, was inaugurated in the restored cloister.

This bronze symbolist bas-relief by Charles Van der Stappen is an allegory of architecture, with a young woman under a clover arch, the profile of Licot in a medallion, accompanied by two shields with Masonic heraldry. It is engraved on the lower left:

A / CHARLES LICOT / ARCHITECT / ARCHEOLOGIST / 1843-1903

On the bottom edge are engraved the dates: 1147 - 1796 - 1893

On the left edge, BERNADO AND ILLIBATE VIRGINI SACRUM which is in fact the chronogram (= 1715) of the portal of the Chapel Saint-Bernard.

On the right edge: IN HOC LOCO HORRORIS PLURES SALVABUNTUR."
