[FR] C'est en 1985 que naissent les premières Francofolies de La Rochelle, Jean-Louis Foulquier et Philippe Friboulet en sont les instigateurs et créateurs.
Aujourd'hui, dirigé par Gérard Pont, Gérard Lacroix et Frédéric Charpail, au sein de la société des Francofolies, le festival s'engage à faire connaître et diffuser la chanson et les musiques actuelles essentiellement d'expression française et francophone auprès d'un large public.
Fort de leur succès, les Francofolies sont exportées dès 1989 au Québec à Montréal (FrancoFolies de Montréal). À partir de 1991, pendant trois éditions, les Francofolies partent en Bulgarie, à Blagoevgrad. En 1994, sont lancées les Francofolies de Spa en Belgique.
En 1995, toujours en parallèle de la version originale à La Rochelle, deux versions sont proposées sur le continent sud-américain à Buenos Aires en Argentine et à Santiago du Chili. En 1996, c'est dans le cadre des Semaines de la Chanson que les Francofolies se jouent à Berlin en Allemagne. En 1999, c’est à Nendaz en Suisse qu'une édition voit le jour. Quatre ans plus tard, en 2003, une nouvelle édition se déroule en Suisse mais cette fois à Genève et les Francofolies reviennent à Berlin en Allemagne.
Une édition des Francofolies à Kinshasa est à l'étude et devrait se dérouler pour la première fois en automne 2015, pilotée par l'agence Impact Diffusion.
La première édition des Francofolies de La Réunion s'est tenue du 10 au 12 mars 2017 à Saint-Pierre sur le site de la Ravine Blanche. 12 000 spectateurs ont été comptabilisés sur les 3 jours pour écouter notamment Arno, J. Birkin, C. Capéo, Zaz, Caravan Palace, O. Ruiz et des "artistes péi" comme Davy Sicard ou Jim Fortuné.
De même, les Francofolies de la Nouvelle-Calédonie ont eu lieu pour la première fois au Centre culturel Tjibaou de Nouméa du 8 au 10 septembre 2017, avec comme têtes d'affiches Youssoupha, Cali, Miossec, LEJ, Claudio Capéo, Black M, Boulevard des airs et Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine, aux côtés d'artistes locaux comme Édou. 6 à 7 000 visiteurs sont alors attendus.
