Close to the Blackfriars chapel in St. Andrews the information board informs about the history of this place:
Welcome to Blackfriars Chapel
Black-cloaked Dominican friars worshipped in this chapel when it was part of a church on the north side of a monastery-like complex. Its fine, decorated ribbed ceiling hints at its former glory.
The order of preachers
The Dominicans were dedicated to saving souls through preaching informed by scholarly learning. The order arrived in the city in the 1400s, building the friary here in the early 1500s. They added this chapel in the 1520s. The friars played a major role within St. Andreas University and some 25 books from their library here survive to this day.
Life after death
In the decades after the Protestant Reformation, the friary was destroyed, leaving only the chapel. For a time, it was used as a pig sty.
