L'Escaut prend sa source près de Gouy au nord de Saint-Quentin, dans l'Aisne, au pied de l'abbaye du Mont-Saint-Martin. Elle est située à 49° 59' 12,95" Nord et 3° 15' 59,40" Est et à une altitude de 97 mètres. L'Escaut naît dans un bassin briqueté, au fond d'un vallon ombragé.

Sur le site, on trouve une statue représentant un enfant sur le dos d'un dauphin. Cette statue a été offerte par la ville d'Anvers, en guise de remerciement pour la prospérité que le fleuve lui a apportée.

The Scheldt originates near Gouy, north of Saint-Quentin, in the Aisne, at the foot of Mont-Saint-Martin Abbey. It is located at 49° 59' 12.95" North and 3° 15' 59.40" East and at an altitude of 97 metres. The Scheldt is born in a brick basin, at the bottom of a shaded valley.

On the site, there is a statue of a child on the back of a dolphin. This statue was donated by the city of Antwerp, as a token of appreciation for the prosperity that the river has brought to it.
