The bench has several colorful birds painted on the left side. The right side holds text.

Bench text:

Neo-tropic birds are named so due to their migration route. These birds migrate between their breeding (United States and Canada) and wintering (Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and South America) grounds. Most birds migrate for the following reasons 1) less competition for nesting space, 2) abundance of food, 3) milder climate, and 4) longer daylight hours. Chances of survival increase due to these reasons. The birds follow very specific routes, topographic landmarks, ecological factors, climate changes and stars (used by nocturnal birds) are used in order to map their location. Most migratory birds of the Galveston Bay region will cross the Gulf of Mexico (500-600 miles). Few will stop on oil platforms for a break. Nearly 333 neo-tropic species of birds out of the 615 species of Texas visiting birds have been recorded in the state of Texas. However, these numbers could decrease quickly due to human/natural impacts such examples are wildfires, developmental clearing, tall structures (windmills, lighthouses) and cats. These birds have helped by controlling insect population and ? (covered by a seashell)
