The sculpture Covered Wagon by Tom Otterness is located on the OU campus in the yard next to Gaylord Hall. It shows a family traveling in a covered wagon: a woman with a pipe holds the reigns to the bull, and two kids (one boy and one girl) are hanging out the back, fighting. According to a NY article, the dad is represented by the bull. The bull has a nose ring and is burdened by some very heavy harness around his neck.
The mother wears is wearing a dress and bonnet as she drives the bull to their destination. It is approximately 10' long and a little over 6' high.
Several student organizations and over 3,000 students have signed the petition to have the sculpture removed. Thirty years ago, the artist allegedly adopted a dog from a shelter, tied it up, and shot it as an expression of art. He has since apologized, but the controversy has followed him.
