"The Work of a Stonemason -
A great abbey had a large stonemasonry workshop. Henry Lathom (d.1319) was one of the mason monks at Evesham Abbey. He built the Abbey's chapter house and great hall.
Later, boys trained as apprentice stonemasons with a Guild master mason for 7 years, then worked as a journeyman for him. To be a master themselves they had to make a special piece for approval by the Guild, before becoming freemen to set up their own workshops.
Robert Vertue Junior (fl. 1505-55) Master of Works at Evesham Abbey trained under the King's Master Mason who was his father. He helped build Henry Vll’s chapel at Westminster Abbey and built the Lichfield Chapel and the Bell Tower here."
