It is not distinguished by its height, which is very modest, but by its beauty and the refinement of its architecture. It is also the only ambulatory choir without radiant chapels that has only one level of elevation.
The rather tasteless exterior of the church and its neo-roman belfry of 1868 do not make us suspect the architectural riches of the interior. The fall of a V2 in August 1944 partially destroyed the church, but it was patiently rebuilt from its debris, and the disaster leaves no trace. "

That day in 1944, Deuil-la-Barre is hit hard and mourns fourteen of its inhabitants including the parish priest. "My grandfather who was a firefighter told me what he saw and he never forgot," says Caroline, a resident. The missile fell in the heart of the church, the inhabitants, did not hear anything coming. The blast is huge. All the stained glass windows in the church were broken, three-quarters of the roof jumped and a whole section of wall collapsed. All windows in downtown homes were broken. The machine of death, shot from Germany and charged with explosives, fell almost by chance. Perhaps it was Paris where a factory nearby. It will take many years to remove all trace of this terrible fact of history which, overnight, gave Hitler's madness a horrible reality in Deuil-la-Barre.

L'extérieur assez insipide de l'église et son clocher néoroman de 1868 ne font pas soupçonner les richesses architecturales de l'intérieur. La chute d'une V2 en août 1944 a partiellement détruit l'église, mais elle a été patiemment reconstruite à partir de ses débris, et la catastrophe ne laisse plus de trace. "

"C'était il y a soixante-dix ans jour pour jour. Le 4 octobre 1944, à 10 h 36 très précisément, un V2, premier missile de croisière de l'histoire avec le V1, arme secrète de l'armée du IIIe Reich, s'abattait sur l'église de Deuil-la-Barre, détruisant une partie du quartier. Pour célébrer cette date anniversaire, la ville organise une commémoration exceptionnelle aujourd'hui et demain à laquelle s'ajoute une exposition de photos et de documents qui a lieu dans l'église jusqu'au 15 octobre.
Ce jour de 1944, Deuil-la-Barre est donc frappé de plein fouet et porte le deuil de quatorze de ses habitants dont le curé de la paroisse. « Mon grand-père qui était pompier m'a raconté ce qu'il a vu et qu'il n'a jamais oublié », rapporte Caroline, une habitante. Le missile s'est abattu au coeur de l'église, les habitants, n'ont rien entendu venir. La déflagration est énorme. Tous les vitraux de l'église ont été brisés, les trois quarts du toit ont sauté et un pan de mur entier s'est écroulé. Toutes les vitres des maisons du centre-ville ont été brisées. L'engin de mort, sans grande précision, tiré depuis l'Allemagne et chargé d'explosifs est tombé là presque par hasard. Peut-être visait-il Paris où bien une usine à proximité. Il faudra de nombreuses années pour faire disparaître toute trace de ce terrible fait de l'histoire qui, du jour au lendemain, donnait à la folie d'Hitler une horrible réalité à Deuil-la-Barre.
Ce matin, à l'heure du bombardement, un dépôt de gerbe est prévu devant le monument commémoratif, à côté de l'église, puis à 17 heures une conférence avec projection d'un film sur la chute du V2 à Deuil-la-Barre et plus largement sur les V2 d'Hitler, a lieu dans la salle Berlioz. Demain, c'est une messe qui sera célébrée à 10 h 30 avant la visite commentée de l'église par Alain Chabanel, président de l'association pour l'histoire et le patrimoine local. "
