As a teacher in the nearby University of Pennsylvania beginning in 1904, Dr. R. Tait McKenzie was the Director of the Physical Education Department and used this position to study and direct a lifestyle of healthy choices and athletics. In 1915, he joined his home country's Canadian forces and continued his physical conditioning work combined with plastic surgery for injured soldiers and creating prosthetic devices for amputees.
Returning to the University of Pennsylvania, he remained there until 1930 before returning to Canada. While at the university, McKenzie created sculptures for the Olympics and after developing a friendship with Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts, he created the Boy Scout sculpture, a copy of which sits in front of the Cradle of Liberty Council in Wayne, PA. The original of this statue resides nearby in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
