This opening is in the side of Silly Mountain. Located at the foot of the Superstition Mountains, Silly Mountain is another product of volcanic activity. There has never been any trace of valuable metal found in these mountains. However, from the mine location one can clearly see one of the most productive gold mines in the area. Someone, probably lacking any geological knowledge, decided it was worth the considerable effort to try to locate ore on this mountain. Silly Mountain is now an Apache Junction park with extensive hiking trails. This mountainside opening is just off a major trail and the park signage recognizes its existence. There are no apparent records of the mine or its success. The shaft has been filled in to a depth of about 6 feet so it doesn't present a safety risk.
