There is also a granite marker near the front of the cemetery that notes, "Three acres deeded to the citizens of Weatherford, Texas by John Warren Curtis 1856".

The University of Texas at Arlington has in their Special Collections a beautiful restored ambrotype photograph of Mr. Curtis, dating to the 1850s. They note that he was born in Tennessee in 1819, and that he was a Citizen of the Republic of Texas by 1842. He married twice and fathered thirteen children. He was a partner in a store in Weatherford, and ultimately his name appeared on the business, J.W. Curtis & Sons, by the time it had relocated to Mineral Wells.

Mr. Curtis is listed in the Patriot Ancestor Album, Volume II, by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (see Website, below). They note that he and his family lived in multiple locations in the old Peters Colony, and that he was heavily involved in things when Parker County was organized in 1855. He was the first mayor of Weatherford, a position he held from June 1858 to August 1858, and also took a turn as sheriff at one point. During the Civil War, he was part of a frontier patrol that kept folks safe from the Comanches while the able-bodied men were off elsewhere, as this was still pretty rough territory. He died in 1882, and is buried here with a significant amount of his family. The cemetery is still in use.
