NRHP Nomination Form"Corsicana's rapid growth during the early 20th century resulted in a dramatic increase in student enrollment at local schools. School board officials deemed the 1902 high school inadequate by 1920, prompting calls for construction of a new facility. They hired St. Louis architect W.B. Ittner to design a new high school and several other schools in the city. Upon its completion in 1923, the 3-story brick building with Renaissance Revival detailing generated great civic pride among the citizens of Corsicana. Its service as the high school (now the Drane Middle School) through the 1970s, ensured the continuing viability of the neighborhood during the early 20th century. A prominent physical landmark in the community, the school campus interrupts West Collin Avenue as it leads into the neighborhood from downtown. One of the few local examples of the Renaissance Revival style, the building retains much of its integrity despite replacement of original wood sash. It therefore continues to contribute to the historic character of the neighborhood."
