"The Abbey of Villers or Villers in Brabant is a former Cistercian abbey located on the territory of the municipality of Villers-la-Ville. Founded in 1146, it was abandoned in 1796 and most of the site is now in ruins.
Owned by the Belgian State, the ruins are listed in the exceptional heritage of the Walloon Region.
It was in 1146, at the invitation of the lord of Marbais and his mother Judith and under the impetus of Saint Bernard that an abbot, twelve monks and five converses arrived from Clairvaux to Villers to found an abbey. These first buildings no longer exist: the Abbey was indeed completely rebuilt throughout the 13th century, the time of its spiritual and temporal apogee. Some abbots are then called to high ecclesiastical functions and preserved texts mention the presence of a hundred monks and three times more convers in the Abbey. Villers was then protected by the powerful dukes of Brabant.
The first internal crises appear at the end of the Middle Ages (decrease in the number of lay people, etc.). From the sixteenth to the end of the seventeenth century, the Abbey has a succession of quiet and troubled periods, during which the monks leave the premises for reasons of insecurity.
The eighteenth century is the second golden age of the Abbey, during which the medieval buildings are refitted in the classical style. In 1796, the French Revolutionary Administration suppresses the Abbey and sells it as national property to a merchant of materials. The majestic ruins of the monastery attract romantics throughout the 19th century. The first restoration began in 1893. It was not until 1984 to see a new major restoration project. It is still on going."

"L’Abbaye de Villers ou de Villers en Brabant est une ancienne abbaye cistercienne située sur le territoire de la commune de Villers-la-Ville. Fondée en 1146, elle fut abandonnée en 1796 et la majeure partie du site est désormais en ruine.
Propriété de l’Etat belge, les ruines sont inscrites au patrimoine exceptionnel de la Région wallonne.
C’est en 1146, à l’invitation du seigneur de Marbais et de sa mère Judith et sous l’impulsion de Saint Bernard qu’un abbé, douze moines et cinq convers arrivent de Clairvaux à Villers pour y fonder une abbaye. Ces premiers bâtiments n’existent plus : l’Abbaye a en effet été complètement reconstruite tout au long du XIIIe siècle, époque de son apogée spirituelle et temporelle. Certains abbés sont alors appelés à de hautes fonctions ecclésiastiques et les textes conservés mentionnent la présence d’une centaine de moines et trois fois plus de convers dans l’Abbaye. Villers bénéficiait alors de la protection des puissants ducs de Brabant.
Des premières crises internes apparaissent dès la fin du moyen-âge (diminution du nombre de convers, etc). Du XVIe à la fin du XVIIe siècle, l’Abbaye connaît une succession de périodes calmes et troublées, durant lesquelles les moines quittent les lieux pour raisons d’insécurité.
Le XVIIIe siècle constitue en revanche le second âge d’or de l’Abbaye, durant lequel les bâtiments médiévaux sont réaménagés dans le style classique. En 1796, l’administration révolutionnaire française supprime l’Abbaye et la vend comme bien national à un marchand de matériaux. Les ruines majestueuses du monastère attirent les romantiques tout au long du XIXe siècle. La première restauration débute en 1893. Il faut attendre 1984 pour voir un nouveau chantier de restauration d’envergure. Il est toujours en cours."
