Mat totémique des Pensionnats

Le totem est un gage de réconciliation et une œuvre de commémoration. Il incarne un fort sentiment d’identité et de fierté pour les Kwakiutls de la côte Ouest canadienne. Le Mât totémique des pensionnats de Joseph représente, de bas en haut : les membres de la famille du commanditaire du Totem; l’anneau de cèdre, symbolisant la sécurité ; la femme sauvage, responsable de la culture traditionnelle ; l’orque, gardienne de la mémoire ; le corbeau, incarnant la collusion entre l’Église et l’État ; l’ours, exprimant la force et la sagesse ; le renard arctique, témoin du passé ; les kulus, ces grands corbeaux noirs qui, dans la légende, ont créé les îles de la côte canadienne du Pacifique en jetant des cailloux dans la mer ; au sommet, le serpent à deux têtes aux ailes déployées en croix.

Residential School Totem Pole

The totem pole is a symbol of reconciliation and commemoration. It embodies a strong sense of the identity and pride of the Kwakiutl Nation of the West Coast of Canada. Joseph’s Residential School Totem Pole depicts, from the bottom to the top: the members of the family of the sponsor of the Totem; the cedar ring symbolizing safety; the wild woman responsible for the traditional culture; the killer whale, the guardian of memory; the crow representing the alliance of Church and State; the bear for its strength and wisdom; the Arctic fox, the witness of the past; the Kulus, the great black ravens that according to the legend created the islands of the West Coast of Canada by dropping pebbles into the ocean; and at the top the two-headed snake with its wings unfurled in the shape of a cross.
