He was born on January 16, 1841 in Florence, Italy and died on November 14, 1899 in Fort Monroe, VA. He attained the rank of Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: HYDE, THOMAS W.

• Date of issue: 8 April 1891
Citation: Led his regiment in an assault on a strong body of the enemy's infantry and kept up the fight until the greater part of his men had been killed or wounded, bringing the remainder safely out of the fight.
