From the people I talked to, (city officials, historic society, preservation society), this was a Standard Oil Station
Back before interstate highways, US Highways, and State Highways were the well traveled thoroughfares. E. 5th St. was the Business route for Missouri Highway 100, an major east-west route for both travelers and commerce.
