Historic Lexington Cemetery was founded in 1849 and is the final resting place of many notable people including, Vice President John C. Breckinridge, Senator Henry Clay and legendary Kentucky Basketball Coach Adolph Rupp. This Kentucky Historical marker stands on Main Street near the entrance to the cemetery.
The text of the marker reads:
LEXINGTON CEMETERY
Incorporated in 1849. Lexington Cemetery was laid out as a natural landscape park. Both Confederate and Union soldiers are buried in this cemetery. Towering over Henry Clay's grave is a 120-foot monument surmonted by his statue. Other noted men, including James Lane Allen, John C. Breckinridge, and John H. Morgan, interred here.
