Text of plaque at gun display.
This reproduction light 3-Pounder, commonly referred to as the "Grasshopper", was so named because of its lightness and mobility. British and Loyalist used these guns in their defense of Ninety Six and Star Fort during the siege of 1781. It fires a 3-Pound solid ball of a cluster of wrapped smaller balls called "grapeshot". About 16 men usually formed each gun crew with eight soldiers carrying and positioning the cannon and remainder actually loading and firing it.
