Jude Fawley is a bright man, forced by circumstance to be a stonemason. He is unhappily married to Arabella. Arabella disappears and Jude follows his dream of betterment by moving to the city of Shaston. There he meets his cousin Sue, another intelligent and unconventional soul. Jude is smitten with Sue, but Sue marries Jude’s former teacher, Philotson after Jude confesses he is married to Arabella. Jude’s woes are compounded when he’s rejected for entry into university on the grounds of his lower class background.
Sue’s marriage fails and she joins Jude as a travelling stonemason. Jude and Sue start a family, which is further enlarged by a son, Juey, Arabella had after leaving Jude. The family cannot find a permanent home as Sue and Jude are living in sin. Sue explains to Juey that they cannot have a permanent home because there are too many of them. Sue and Jude return home one day to find that Juey has killed his half siblings and himself because he thaught it would get Sue and Jude a family home. Sue takes the deaths as a sign from God and she returns to Philotson.
