An diesem Platz erhob sich die Bastion Rudolphus.
Sie gehörte zu einer mächtigen Festungsanlage, die in den
Jahren 1616 bis 1625 von dem niederländischen Ingenieur-Hauptmann
Johan van Valckenburgh
geschaffen wurde. Sie bestand aus einem Wall- und Grabengürtel,
verstärkt durch 22 Bastionen und 11 Vorwerke.
Diesem Verteidigungsring verdankte es die Stadt Hamburg,
daß sie während des dreißjährigen Krieges uneinnehmbar
blieb und sich seit dem 17. Jahrhundert zu einer der
bedeutendsten Handelsstädte Europas entwickeln konnte.

At this place rose the bastion Rudolphus.
It belonged to a mighty fortification in the
years 1616-1625 created by the Dutch engineer captain
Johan van Valckenburgh.
It consisted of a wall and ditch belt,
reinforced by 22 bastions and 11 outworks.
Thanks to this defensive ring, the city of Hamburg
became impregnable during the Thirty Years' War
and developed since the 17th century to one of
Europe's most important trading cities.
