Red Oak has a population of about 500 people. The area was originally settled in the mid 1800's, and a trading post was established 8 miles northeast on the Fort Smith/Boggy Depot Road. It was a stopping point for the stage line, and in 1868 a post office was established. When the railroad came through the area in the late 1800's, the old trading post closed, and the post office was moved 8 miles to the southwest to the current location of Red Oak. The town was incorporated in 1900, and has been primarily an agricultural community.

The town does not have a website, and all we could determine is that they have a mayor and city manager form of government. Their municipal office is located in a one-story metal building on the east side of N. Main Street. A sign on the front reads: "Town of Red Oak and Public Works."
