" Fondée par le roi Louis VI le Gros (1081-1137), l’abbaye de Chaalis connaît un grand rayonnement spirituel durant tout le Moyen Âge et les rois de France se plaisent à y séjourner. Guillaume de Digulleville, un des plus grands écrivains du XIVe siècle français, y demeure sa vie durant.
À la Renaissance, le fastueux cardinal Hippolyte d’Este (1509-1572), premier abbé commendataire nommé par son parent le roi François Ier(1494-1547), fait venir à Chaalis des artistes italiens de grand renom tels Serlio, théoricien de l’architecture ou le peintre Primatice. Le Tasse fait alors un séjour à l’abbaye.
Au XVIIIe, un nouvel abbé, le comte de Clermont (1709-1771), petit-fils du Grand Condé, demande à l’architecte Jean Aubert des plans pour édifier de nouveaux bâtiments abbatiaux. Les constructions médiévales sont mises à bas mais le nouvel ensemble, d’architecture classique, n'est qu’en partie réalisé faute de crédits.
Vendu comme « bien national » à la Révolution, le domaine est restauré dans la seconde partie du XIXe siècle par les Hainguerlot-Vatry, une famille très proche de la dynastie royale d’Orléans. Chaalis est alors fréquenté par des musiciens, des peintres et des écrivains de renom tels Gérard de Nerval et Théophile Gautier.
En 1902, Nélie Jacquemart (1841-1912), veuve du banquier Édouard André, achète le domaine et y fait disposer une partie des ses exceptionnelles œuvres d’art, l’autre étant présentée dans son hôtel parisien du boulevard Haussmann qui deviendra par la suite l’autre musée Jacquemart-André. À sa mort en 1912, elle lègue tous ses biens dont le domaine et les collections de Chaalis, à l’Institut de France qui en 1924, y dépose le fonds « Jean-Jacques Rousseau » du comte Fernand de Girardin."

Founded by the king Louis VI the Gros (1081-1137), the abbey of Chaalis knew a great spiritual radiance throughout the Middle Ages and the kings of France are pleased to stay there. Guillaume de Digulleville, one of the greatest French writers of the fourteenth century, remained there for the rest of his life.
During the Renaissance, the prodigious Cardinal Hippolyte d'Este (1509-1572), first abbot commendataire appointed by his relative King Francis I (1494-1547), brought to Chile famous Italian artists such as Serlio, theorist of the architecture or the painter Primatice. The cup then makes a stay at the abbey.
In the eighteenth century, a new abbot, the Comte de Clermont (1709-1771), grandson of the Grand Condé, asked the architect Jean Aubert plans to build new abbey buildings. The medieval constructions were abandoned but the new ensemble, of classical architecture, was only partially realized for want of credits.
Sold as a "national property" during the Revolution, the estate was restored in the second half of the 19th century by the Hainguerlot-Vatry family, a family very close to the Royal Dynasty of Orléans. Chaalis was frequented by renowned musicians, painters and writers such as Gérard de Nerval and Théophile Gautier.
In 1902, Nélie Jacquemart (1841-1912), widow of the banker Édouard André, bought the estate and arranged some of its exceptional works of art, the other being presented in his Parisian hotel on the Boulevard Haussmann which will become the other Jacquemart-André museum. At her death in 1912, she left all her possessions, including the estate and the collections of Chaalis, to the Institut de France, which in 1924 deposited there the "Jean-Jacques Rousseau" fonds of Count Fernand de Girardin.
