Baron Frederick DeBary, a wealthy New York resident and importer of fine wines, built his winter home, DeBary Hall, in the town that is now named after him.

Baron Frederick DeBary had two children. One developed breathing issues and their doctors recommended that spending winters in Florida would be beneficial so DeBary Hall was built. Frederick DeBary became a prominent member of society in this area, giving many parties and hunting expeditions enticing many famous guests. From the Volusia County website (

"DeBary reportedly entertained Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Grover Cleveland; the Astors, Goulds and Vanderbilts; and the Prince of Wales, who went on to become King Edward VII." His home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and is currently the home to the Florida Federation of Art.
The Baron was also a generous man and donated all of the lumber to build the historic All Saints Episcopal Church which is also on the NRHP.
