This penny smasher is located on the grounds of a government run firefighter and emergency response training center. During times when the National Terror Alert Level is Orange (Severe) or higher, the general public is not admitted to the grounds, only students and staff. When the Alert Level is Yellow (Elevated) or lower, the grounds should be open to the general public. If you wish to check the current threat level, you can do so by visiting the Departement of Homeland Security's website at www.dhs.gov.
To be admitted to the grounds to find the penny smasher, you will need to present identification. The guard at the entrance will check your car for anything that could be considered dangerous. Please be careful what you bring into the facility. For example: Don't drive your pick-up with the gunrack for this one. There are plenty of places to park near the memorial so no true hiking is required. There are walkways for strollers or wheelchairs and there is a map at the entrance to show you the way around the grounds.
Please be sure to read the information in the small bulletin board near the memorial. If the flags are at half staff, the name of the firefighter/firefighters who they are honoring will be on the board.
Be sure to find the information for the virtual cache and the benchmark located here as well. There are also two Maryland Historical Marker waymarks just outside the entrance to this location as well.
