Each winter tourist season on the last full weekend of February the residents of Hendry County hold the annual Swamp Cabbage Festival in the City of LaBelle.

The festival has been a yearly event for over 50 years and is a local celebration to honor the official state tree, the Sabal Palm, aka cabbage palm, by eating it. The heart of the cabbage palm is prepared into swamp cabbage or fritters. Both are considered by locals as a southern Florida Cracker vegetable delicacy. In fancy fine dining restaurants it is know as "heart of palm" and garners high prices on the menu.

During the two day event there are numerous events including a pageant, street fest, Old Timers Dinner, rodeo, 5k Swamp Stomp, parade, car show, armadillo races, river cruises, and lots of musical entertainment and vendors.

While at the festival be sure to try the swamp cabbage, gator, and fry bread.
