Jonasson's Department Store sign is shouted out by a bright, noisy lottery sign.

Think of all the department stores that "used to be downtown." They're mostly gone, now. We have Macy's, squatting in the Kaufmann's store by virtue of a name change and umpteen corporate takeovers. And we have Saks Fifth Avenue, where most people can't afford to shop.

The rest are gone. Not just the big ones, like Gimbels and Joseph Horne, but also the smaller department stores and boutiques: Rosenbaum's, Frank & Sedar, Hughes & Hatcher, Limited, Lane Bryant, Coach House, Surrey and Chico's... and Jonasson's.

You have to squint pretty hard to see the Jonasson's signs. The name's painted twice on their former building along Liberty Avenue at Sixth Street. The larger vertical sign is fairly easy to read. But, for extra credit, look way over in the upper right hand corner of the building. You'll see a second faded ad.
