From the Australian Town and Country Journal, of Saturday 8 January, 1887, comes the following excerpt:

EMMAVILLE
January 3
"SUDDEN DEATH-- With great regret I have to report the death of Mr. John Reynolds, son of Mr. Thomas Reynolds, of Mount Hopton, one our most esteemed and respected residents. Young Mr. Reynolds, with a party of friends, had prceeded to the Severn River on Saturday last, to celebrate the advent of the New Year, and after the usual picnic festivities the male portion of the party went a short distance up the river for a swim. After being in the water for some time Mr. Reynolds was seen to suddenly sink. He appeared once more on the surface; but although his companions made every exertion to get to his asistance, he sank again. The body was not recovered until the next morning. The funeral, which took place today, was attended by all classes of the community, fully eight hundred persons present." [Courtesy of Trove: Emmaville, page 16]
