Clara K. Mangus was born in 1890, the year that the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute was established. Today, it is the University of North Texas, and the "Mean Green" gave Pittsburgh Steeler Joe Greene his nickname.

Mrs. Mangus is buried with her husband, Nick E. Mangus, and they share a white marble monument with the family name "Mangus" on both sides, with an urn in the center and floral detail on the upper corner of each headstone. Their wedding date, June 5, 1916, is noted, and Mrs. Mangus's inscription reads:

Significant events that occurred in her lifetime include:

1890 - The Lakota Sioux are "put in their place" at Wounded Knee, SD, with 153 dead and others injured.
1900 - William McKinley is re-elected US President, but he won't make it to 1902.
1910 - Halley's Comet returns to the skies, taking Mark Twain with it when it departs.
1920 - Hydrocodone is first synthesized in Germany. Its abuse will be a major problem nearly a hundred years later.
1930 - George Washington's sculpted head at Mt. Rushmore is dedicated.
1940 - Hattie McDaniel is the first African-American to win an Academy Award, for her role as "Mammy" in "Gone with the Wind."
1950 - The Korean "Conflict" begins.
1960 - Elvis Presley resumes his singing career after a two year stint in the US Army.
1970 - Four dead in Ohio as Ohio National Guardsmen quell a disturbance at Kent State University.
1980 - AC/DC vocalist, Bon Scott, and Led Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham, imbibe a little too much alcohol and are found dead in separate incidents.
1990 - ARPANET is officially decommissioned. Say good-bye to Archie and Jughead and Veronica and some of those other tools you used in college.
1995 - Salt Lake City, UT is chosen to host the 2002 Winter Olympics.
