One of the oldest villages in Twente, with remarkably rolling ash and five hills. Markelo has many agricultural neighborhoods, where modern business practices are linked to traditions.
Sightseeing are the Martinus Church, the Mill of Buursink De Hoop (a wind, corn and peel mill), Museum Farm Eungs Schöppe and of course the Sheep Herd at the Borkeld. There are many annually recurring events, such as the open air performances in the Kösterskoele, Maarkelse Lente and the midwinter walk.
