No.19 Broad Street.
From 1748 to 1752 the town
house of Marmaduke Gwyn of
Breconshire; his daughter
Sarah married Charles
Wesley in 1749.

Words from British Listed Buildings and Wikipedia.

An elegant early C18th town house, now Grade II listed, which was the home of Marmaduke Gwyn from 1748 to 1752. His daughter, Sarah, married Charles Wesley in 1749. It's built of brick with a hipped slate roof and a brick end stack.

Of a three-window range, three storeys and cellar, the entrance is to the left, a six-panel door and fanlight, in a panelled round-headed case under a moulded flat hood on fluted pilasters. The two 6/6 sashes are in broad beaded cases under gauged brick flat arches.

First storey has three 6/6 sashes, similarly mounted, and a leaded storey band above.

Second storey has 3/6 sashed windows also similarly mounted, and a leaded storey band above. The parapet is restored and stone coped.

There is a segmental arch over the grated cellar opening and the rainwater head is lead with a crest, the head taking rainwater from behind the parapet.

Marmaduke Gwynne (1691–1769) was an early and influential Methodist convert, converted to Methodism by Howell Harris. He served as a legal adviser and financial supporter to the Methodists and his daughter Sarah (1726-1822 and fifth child of nine) married Charles Wesley on 8 April 1749 at Llanllywenfel parish church near Garth, Powys. Sarah had met Charles two years before and it was said to be "love at first sight" and a rare happy marriage in the Wesley family. Charles is said to be "the greatest hymn writer of all time", with about 6,500 hymns to his credit.
