A gift from the Class of 1961, the Lamp of Learning is the center of the campus mall at Southern Nazarene University. A plaque at the base of the statue states that the lamp is a "symbol of the ideals and objectives of Bethany Nazarene College" and encourages "development of character for attainment of culture
in dedication to Christ."
In the past, the Lamp has burned year-round; in times when natural gas prices are high it has been turned off for the summer. A recent announcement by the SNU administration stated that the Lamp would burn throughout the school year.
Ceremonies for incoming freshmen and departing seniors are centered around the Lamp. The Lamp even has its own Twitter feed (twitter.com/lampoflearning) which states that "I am the symbol of learning for the students at SNU as my flame shines bright and my sarcasm shines brighter." There's even a song, "Lamp of Learning," by a former campus band called "Shem" that exemplifies the latter part of that Twitter quote.
