The Ossuary was completed in 1961 and contains the remains of all Italian POWs and internees who had died in Australian prison camps It is built of Castlemaine stone, has an altar of white Italian marble, and Roman roof tiles
Originally the below ground crypt held the caskets , but following floods in 1973 the caskets were moved to a metre above the ground level and the crypt infilled.
The names of the 130 interred here are listed on bronze plaques on the walls of the Sanctuary and bronze gates enclose the building.
