The Conduit
A water supply point,
given to the town in 1581
by Sir Henry Sidney,
was moved here from
the High Cross
in 1743.

The site of the original conduit brought into town by Sir Henry Sidney in the 16th century was a few yards to the south near the Buttercross built in 1743–6 to replace the 16th century New House where the Corporation held its meetings. This was originally the site of the High Cross the official centre of the town. Research in the 1980s revealed the course of the conduit from a rain-filled reservoir on Whitcliffe down into the town.
