This little Presbyterian Church appeared sufficiently interesting that we decided it was worth investigation. The simplified Gothic Revival styling told us it was quite likely a turn of the century church.

The church seems to have been organized before the turn of the 20th century, with this building having been built just after the turn of the century, possibly as late as 1906. It was the style and size of the steeple and the building itself that made us dig deeper - they suggested a date of construction which turned out to be in line with our estimates.

The town of Northport existed as early as 1882, experiencing its first disastrous fire in 1892. More fires wiped out the business district on May 8th, 1893, August 10th, 1893, March 18th, 1896 and May 3rd, 1898. It can be seen, then, that this may not have been the first Presbyterian Church built in Northport.

The building is in what appears to be good condition. Now wearing vinyl siding and asbestos shingles, it is a certainty that it began its life wearing wooden clapboard siding and wood shingles or shakes. It has some stained glass, hopefully original.

Northport Church (July 5, '06) 142
The Volume mentioned above is a PDF, 19 MB in size.

It is not clear from the above whether the church was built in 1906 or the photo was taken in 1906, but in any event, it can be seen that this church was standing in 1906. I suspect the photo was taken in 1906. The 1906 photo below is the one from page 142 referred to in the index.

The church has no website, but appears to be active, though the denomination is, at this time, unknown.
