"In 1740, under Bishop Antoine Fagon's episcopate, the Cathedral Chapter decided to order a new organ to replace that of the seventeenth century, which had become too old.
Around Marcellin Tribuot, the organ builder, seven people work on the creation of the grandstand and the buffet. An architect Pierre Burgundy, a draftsman, sieur Renaud, a carpenter Guyot, a carpenter Thomazic, two turners on wood, Pintier man and Michel Housset and two sculptors Jean Véniat and François-Joseph Lottembert. Work ordered in 1740 will be completed two years later. Two teams share the work: one takes care of the platform, the other of the buffet.
Guyot performs the buffet drawn by Renaud. Finally Véniat and Lottembert, Vannes sculptors, realize the carved decoration. The organ consists of two buffets: the positive and the grand organ. The positive is placed corbelled in the middle of the grandstand while the grand-organ consists of three levels of molded panels, squares at the lower level, rectangular horizontal at the median level and rectangular vertical at the upper level. In the center of the massif is ordered, around the window of the now closed console, rectangular panels and squares alternate on three floors.
The simplicity of the composition of this buffet, punctuated by striking elements of sculpture, highlights the piping of the organ. The overall design focuses on the instrument and not on the construction that goes with it. However, this characteristic sobriety of the mid-eighteenth century is embellished by the freedom of creation of the sculptors who have shown a great mastery and an original inventive spirit.
In 1894, the instrument was rebuilt by Louis Debierre who installs an electric traction. The postman George Gloton restores the instrument in 1920 then, a second time, in 1935. On July 18, 1980, the instrumental part is classified "historical monument".
In 1984, it was decided to restore the organ identically and the work was entrusted to Claude Thibaud and Claude Madigout, Nantes. Thus, all the material set up by Louis Debierre in 1896 has been preserved and only a game of cornet came to complete the initial composition of the organ builder Nantes. Begun on 19 February 1984, the restoration work covered both the instrumental part and the organ case, ending in October 1985. "

"C'est en 1740, sous l'épiscopat de Monseigneur Antoine Fagon, que le Chapître de la Cathédrale décide de commander un nouvel orgue pour remplacer celui du XVIIe siècle devenu trop vétuste.
Autour de Marcellin Tribuot, le facteur d'orgues, sept personnes travaillent à la réalisation de la tribune et du buffet. Un architecte Pierre Bourgogne, un dessinateur, le sieur Renaud, un menuisier Guyot, un charpentier Thomazic, deux tourneurs sur bois, homme Pintier et Michel Housset et deux sculpteurs Jean Véniat et François-Joseph Lottembert. Les travaux commandés en 1740 seront terminés deux ans plus tard. Deux équipes se partagent le travail : l'une s'occupe de la tribune, l'autre du buffet.
Guyot exécute le buffet dessiné par Renaud. Enfin Véniat et Lottembert, sculpteurs vannetais, réalisent le décor sculpté. L'orgue est constitué de deux buffets : le positif et le grand orgue. Le positif est placé en encorbellement au milieu de la tribune tandis que le massif du grand-orgue est composé de trois niveaux de panneaux moulurés, carrés au niveau inférieur, rectangulaires horizontaux au niveau médian et rectangulaires verticaux au niveau supérieur. Au centre du massif s'ordonne, autour de la fenêtre de la console aujourd'hui fermée, panneaux rectangulaires et carrés alternés sur trois étages.
La simplicité de la composition de ce buffet, ponctuée par des éléments marquants de sculpture, met en valeur la tuyauterie de l'orgue. La conception d'ensemble est axée sur l'instrument et non sur la construction qui l'accompagne. Cependant, cette sobriété caractéristique du milieu du XVIIIe siècle est agrémentée par la liberté de création des sculpteurs qui ont ici fait preuve d'une grande maîtrise et d'un esprit inventif original.
En 1894, l'instrument est reconstruit par Louis Debierre qui installe une traction électrique. Le facteur Georges Gloton restaure l'instrument en 1920 puis, une seconde fois, en 1935. Le 18 juillet 1980, la partie instrumentale est classée « monument historique ».
En 1984, il fut décidé de restaurer l'orgue à l'identique et les travaux ont été confiés aux facteurs Claude Thibaud et Claude Madigout, de Nantes. Ainsi, l'ensemble du matériel mis en place par Louis Debierre en 1896 a été conservé et seul un jeu de cornet est venu compléter la composition initiale du facteur d'orgues nantais. Commencés le 19 février 1984, les travaux de restauration ont porté à la fois sur la partie instrumentale et sur le buffet de l'orgue, pour s'achever au mois d'octobre 1985."
