Located in Phoenix, Arizona, South Mountain Park covers 16,000 acres of Sonoran Desert mountain landscape making it the largest city park in the world. Just inside the park the Judith Tunell trail was designed by the city parks department to be wheelchair accessible. The trail is a .5 mile loop with a 25' elevation gain. As part of Noah Cress' Eagle Scout project, trail markers have been installed which are adapted to the needs of the sight impaired. Braille symbols are available and smart phone technology can be used to describe the scene in front of the hiker. To quote from the Eagle Scout Project website, "This is a new technology application that uses Bluetooth for iPhones and Android devices. This technology is being introduced as a stand-alone application to describe, in a grid format, the surrounding area and features. It was released in March 2013 for indoor uses. This trail is the first outdoor application of its kind using this technology."
