Description: Sojourner Truth was born a slave with thr name Isabella in New York State. Freed in 1827, she changed her name and became a evangelist, proponent of Women's rights and Abolition, and a Temperence speaker. Her fame in these areas is all the more amazing in that she had almost no formal education and was unable to read or write. Her exact date of birth is not know, her headstone shows that she was about 105 when she died. Historians feel that this is incorrect, that she was closer to the upper 80's.
