In Newbury, along High Road, is the First Parish Burying Ground Cemetery.
The cemetery is located on the east side of High Road, across the street from the First Parish Church, and about a half mile south of the town boundary with Newburyport. Park at the church.
The cemetery is a roughly rectangular plot that is raised relative to the road. There is a main entrance with a gate near the front of the church, and there are ways around the retaining wall.
The oldest graves are generally at the north end, though they are dispersed among more recent graves. The cemetery was established in 1637, and I saw graves in the 17th through 20th centuries. One source stated that there were over 2000 grave markers, while another stated that there were over 3100. There is an estimate of at least 6000 people buried here.
