"Die Trauernde" ("the mourner") is a sculpture commemorating the victims of the Second World War, created in 1949 by the sculptor and graphic artist Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981). The 3-meter-tall sculpture stands in the Lichhof, the former cemetery ("Leichenhof") of the Romanesque basilika of St. Maria im Kapitol (St. Mary's in the Capitol) in Cologne.
It goes back to an earlier work of Marcks, at which he had worked in the years 1935/37 and in which he had used studies of his Jewish friend Trude Jalowetz. A kind of angel of death should be this figure, which was intended as a tomb. In the war, it was destroyed and the artist resumed the design in his mourner. His peculiar way of communicating universal attitudes by means of gestures and simple reduced design of the figures also led to the understanding of the general state of mind of the war-torn Germans in the figure of the angel. In general, the figure was understood in her humble attitude as a kind of atonement.
