Unfortunately, this town has gone through some incredibly rough economic times over the last decade. The staple of the economy was the Irish Moss industry. Irish Moss is used as an emulsifier or a source of gloss for things such as ice cream, chocolate milk and lipstick. However, due to overharvesting or the intrusion of invasive salt water species (depends who you ask), it is no longer economical.
The fishery is not what it used to be but it is still home to an active lobster industry.
