A smaller plaque below explains the standard -
"The British Legion Standard consists in the main of Blue and
Gold: with the Union Jack in the place of honour.
The Union Jack, mode up of the Crosses of St. George, St. Andrew and St. Patrick, is the symbol of the British Army and the Empire and stands for all that every Briton holds most dear.
The Blue is there to remind us of those who served in the air and on or under the sea: the Gold to signify that all were tried by fire."
