Elle a été retrouvée dans sa voiture, dans un début d'incendie, à Villejuif après avoir été tuée par balle. Les enquêteurs pensaient initialement que le motif du meurtre était une tentative de vol de la voiture. Après coup, ils supposent plutôt que Sid Ahmed Ghlam aurait voulu tuer Aurélie car il « la suspectait d'être un agent du renseignement. Il aurait été intrigué par la présence de cette voiture, au milieu de la rue, et de cette femme assise sur le siège passager avec un ordinateur portable sur les genoux. »
