It is at the end of the 11th century, in 1092, that Gédouin and Ebo, lords of Parthenay, give to the abbey of La Chaise-Dieu in Auvergne a land located near their city, in a place called Parthenay-le- Old. A church, seat of a parish, already exists in this place. The monks of La Chaise-Dieu decide to establish a priory. It was built in the late 11th century and early 12th century; a new church replaces the old one.

The church is built according to a Latin cross plan: nave composed of a central vessel covered with a broken cradle vault and quarter-circle vaulted collaterals, transept with oriented chapels and semi-circular apse choir, vaulted in ass of oven. The crossing of the transept is covered with a dome on horns dominated by a powerful octagonal bell tower. The interior of the church is soberly animated by a carved decoration that focuses on the capitals. The pillars of the cross of the transept are adorned with animals and monsters; lions and sagittarians are identified by an inscription. In the nave, on the other hand, the vegetable decoration dominates.

The facade is organized horizontally in two levels separated by a carved cornices cornice. It is divided vertically by two buttresses-columns which delimit a broad central span and two lateral spans a little narrower. On the ground floor, a gate opens in the central part; it is flanked on each side by a blind arcade. On the upper level, a large bay surmounts the portal; it is framed by two smaller windows.

The carved decoration is mainly concentrated on the first level of the facade. The cornice, adorned with cats' heads, is supported by modillions embellished with human heads, animals or monsters.
The arch of the portal and the lateral arches are repetitively adorned with carved motifs arranged in a radiant order, in which we can recognize in particular griffins and women in tubs, quadrupeds, women with fishtail-shaped bodies. .
The sculptures of the tympanums of the two lateral arches constitute the strong points of the ornamentation of the facade. On the left, a rider holding on his fist a hawk crowds a character on the ground. On the right is the fight between Samson and the lion.

The priory buildings were built north of the church. The façade of the chapter house still remains from the Romanesque period.

C'est à la fin du 11e siècle, en 1092, que Gédouin et Ebo, seigneurs de Parthenay, donnent à l'abbaye de La Chaise-Dieu en Auvergne un terrain situé près de leur ville, dans un lieu dénommé Parthenay-le-Vieux. Une église, siège d'une paroisse, existe déjà en ce lieu. Les moines de la Chaise-Dieu décident d'y établir un prieuré. Celui-ci est construit à la fin du 11e siècle et au début du 12e siècle ; une nouvelle église se substitue à l'ancienne.

L'église est édifiée selon un plan en croix latine : nef composée d'un vaisseau central couvert d'une voûte en berceau brisé et de collatéraux voûtés en quart de cercle, transept doté de chapelles orientées et chœur à abside demi-circulaire, voûtée en cul de four. La croisée du transept est couverte d'une coupole sur trompes que domine un puissant clocher octogonal. L'intérieur de l'église est sobrement animé par un décor sculpté qui se concentre sur les chapiteaux. Les piliers de la croisée du transept sont ornés d'animaux et de monstres ; des lions et des sagittaires y sont identifiés par une inscription. Dans la nef, en revanche, le décor végétal domine.

La façade est organisée horizontalement en deux niveaux séparés par une corniche à modillons sculptés. Elle est divisée verticalement par deux contreforts-colonnes qui délimitent une large travée centrale et deux travées latérales un peu plus étroites. Au rez-de-chaussée, un portail ouvre dans la partie centrale ; il est flanqué, de chaque côté, d'une arcade aveugle. Au niveau supérieur, une grande baie surmonte le portail ; elle est encadrée par deux fenêtres plus petites.

Le décor sculpté se concentre essentiellement au premier niveau de la façade. La corniche, ornée de têtes de chats, est portée par des modillons agrémentés de têtes humaines, d'animaux ou de monstres.
Les voussures du portail et des arcades latérales sont ornées de façon répétitive de motifs sculptés disposés en ordre rayonnant, où l'on peut reconnaître notamment des griffons et des femmes dans des baquets, des quadrupèdes, des femmes au corps en forme de queue de poisson.
Les sculptures des tympans des deux arcades latérales constituent les points forts de l'ornementation de la façade. À gauche, un cavalier tenant sur son poing un faucon foule un personnage à terre. À droite, est représentée la lutte entre Samson et le lion.

Les bâtiments du prieuré ont été édifiés au nord de l'église. Il subsiste de l'époque romane la façade de la salle capitulaire.
